01The sound is distorted or gritty
This is the most common one, and it is almost always the boost being pushed past what the source can take. Past the red mark on the slider the audio itself starts to break up, before the extension ever touches it. The fix is to back off a little or let the limiter work harder.
- Come down off the red. Drop the slider below the red mark and listen again. On most tracks the difference between 300% and 500% is smaller than it looks.
- Check the limiter is on. Open the extension settings and find Limiter. It is on out of the box, so if it got switched off, switch it back.
- Set Character to Clean. Clean is the default. Loud plays harder but lets the peaks through, which is exactly the grit you hear.
- Leave Maximum reduction around 6 dB. That is the cleanest spot. Lower values give denser bass but clearly more distortion.
- Turn the bass down. Bass boost and the Mix presets make the limiter work far harder than volume alone. If you run both, expect to give something back.
Changed a lot and lost track? Reset limiter to default puts the whole limiter card back where it started.
02No sound after turning it on
- Make sure the tab is really playing. The extension boosts a tab that already has sound. It cannot start playback for you.
- Reload the tab, then turn it on again. This clears almost every case where a page grabbed the audio before the extension did.
- Read what the popup says. When a tab cannot be boosted, the popup tells you so instead of failing quietly.
03It will not turn on for this page
The popup says Can't enable here. Some pages are off limits to every extension, not just this one, because the browser itself blocks them:
- Browser pages: anything starting with chrome://, including settings and the new tab page.
- The Chrome Web Store: extensions are not allowed to touch it.
- Tabs with no audio: there is nothing to boost yet. Start playback first.
Nothing is broken when this happens, and there is no workaround, because the limit sits in the browser rather than in the extension.
04Something does not work on a site I use
The boost and the effects (bass, reverb, brightness, 8D) work on any tab that plays sound, with no site access needed. Two features work inside the page itself, so they need a little more:
- Speed presets need site access. The first time you use Sped Up, Slowed or Nightcore on a site, the browser asks to let the extension in. If you said no, speed will not change there. Turn the preset on again and allow it.
- Some players do not let speed change at all. The Mix panel then says Speed change does not work on this page. Reverb, brightness and 8D still do. That is the player's limit.
- Auto-skip works on four sites: YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify and SoundCloud. It needs access to those sites, which you grant in one click from the settings.
Still not working? Tell us which site in the bug report box (see 08). Knowing the site is usually all it takes to fix it.
05Loud ads blast through
Turn on Jump protection in the extension settings. It holds back a sudden jump in loudness, an advert for instance, instead of letting it hit you. It is off by default and worth turning on if you use a heavy boost or headphones.
06It sounds thin on laptop speakers
Not a fault. The extension works on the stereo image, so bass, space and voice lift come through fullest on headphones. Small laptop speakers simply cannot reproduce part of what the bass modes and 8D add, so a lot of the effect has nowhere to go.
07I lost my settings
Right after a reset, the popup shows a Restore previous button with your last values. That is the quickest way back.
Everything lives only in your browser on this computer. Nothing is synced to an account, so settings do not travel between computers, and removing the extension deletes them. You can also wipe everything on purpose with Clear all extension data in the settings.
08Report a bug or ask for a feature
The extension settings have a Got a bug or an idea? box. It sends what you type and the extension's version number, with no account, no email and no sign-in. It is the fastest way to reach the developer, and every message is read.
When something is broken, the most useful details are the site, the browser and what you had switched on. It saves a round trip.
